We’ve officially been baby showered

Nerd baby shower

In case you can’t tell, that’s a Star Trek feeding set. It looks like the Enterprise. It has flashing LEDs.Flashing. LEDs.

Now that we’ve established just how geeky we are, we can move on.

Our shower was awesome. Yes, there were little yellow onesies and pink butterflies and lots of pastel-colored wrapping paper. Yes, there were finger foods served on little platters. Yes, I had to wear a shiny pink sash that said “Mommy To Be.” (As my cousin noted, “Are they worried someone’s going to have a hard time figuring out who’s pregnant?” You can’t miss me, kittens. I’m a planet…or at the very least, Pluto.) There the similarities to a traditional shower end.

For one, it was co-ed. I pretty much refuse to do a girls-only baby shower. In my opinion, babies are about as much the sole province of mom as fixing toilets are the sole province of dads. Which is to say, I fix a lot of toilets. So we did a co-ed shower, and as we learned when we threw our friends’ baby shower a few months ago, having both sexes represented kind of makes things more fun.

Alcohol was served. Games that weren’t lame were played. Crass comments were made. (“What are breast milk storage bags? Aren’t those called ‘breasts’?”) Generally speaking, it wasn’t a bunch of ladies sitting around rubbing my belly and gushing. I mean, that happened too. (Kellen’s family was there. Gushing is an Olympic sport in his family.) But…it wasn’t all it was.

We got a ton of stuff, too. A couple of days before, Sorina–the friend who offered up her gorgeous home for the shower–told me to make sure we brought a big car, because she already had a huge haul in her living room. Sure enough, we managed to fill Kellen’s car…and when we transferred it to the house, we had so much stuff it wouldn’t all fit in the second bedroom. Pretty nuts. We managed to knock a lot of items off our must-get list, thanks to our awesome friends and family. Rachael–the new mom friend I’ve mentioned on here repeatedly–got us pretty much our entire newborn cloth diaper stash. It’s AMAZING.

We got some fun items, too, like, well, the Star Trek feeding set. We got a hilarious number of identical wash cloths and bath towels. I don’t think our registry at Target worked at all.

In all, it was really fun and really helpful. I was surprised that we got almost no clothes at all! Hoorah!

Surprisingly, we’ve already managed to get pretty much everything unpacked, washed and put away. I’ve got a boil pile (bottles, prefolds, and pump stuff) sitting by the stove, ready to go. The remaining items (about $600 worth! YIKES!) we went ahead and ordered off our registry, since we’ve pretty much only got a month left. Most of it will be arriving in the next couple of days (thanks, Amazon prime!), and then we’ll have to do another round of washing and putting away. In all, though, I’m really pleased with how everything has turned out.

It feels so good to have the shower behind us. It feels like it’s all downhill from here. We’ve still got a pretty impressive to do list before the baby gets here, but if today is any indication of the sort of speed we can generate to get $#!& done, I don’t think it’s going to take us very long to get everything ready. I can’t wait for March to be here.
