I just wanted to share a quick update on Thanksgiving. I wanted to do this a week ago, but things have been hectic.
This year, we went easy on ourselves on Thanksgiving day since the rest of the long weekend was travel-heavy. We met up with my parents at a local restaurant for a Thanksgiving feast. It was pretty great. We didn’t have to spend days preparing or worry about dishes after. There were fewer leftovers, but since we were going out of town, we wouldn’t have been able to eat them anyhow. It was pretty fantastic and low-key, and I may do this again in the future, even if we aren’t traveling.
On Friday, we made the long drive up to visit my grandmother. 7-ish hours in the car with a 2-year-old. Isla did pretty well, though, all things considered. On Saturday, we did a big dinner with my entire extended family. Isla had a great time with her second cousin, playing in the leaves in my grandmother’s backyard and getting carried around the house like a doll. Sunday, we got up early and drove back to Austin. We took back roads to avoid interstate traffic, since we figured 35 would be a nightmare.
Then on Monday, I flew out on business…hence not getting this out until today.
It was a good time. I love getting to spend time with my grandmother, who is 88 and has lots of amazing stories about her girlhood in rural Arkansas. (Two of my favorites this year were hearing about how she would spend the whole summer with her grandmother, who put her bed out on the porch and covered it in mosquito netting all summer long and that’s where my grandma would sleep with her grandmother, and then how their house wasn’t sealed up so one night when it snowed, she woke up in bed covered in it.) It’s also great getting caught up with all my cousins. I grew up with a really close knit family, and I saw my cousins at least once a week, usually more often.
The best thing about Thanksgiving, though, is that it kicks off the holiday season. We’ve been working on getting lights and decorations up and playing a lot of Christmas music. We have a big Christmas party next weekend. I’m super excited about all the holiday festivities. It’s my favorite time of year. There’s just something magical about the winter holidays.
Do you have any special holiday traditions/festivities you’re looking forward to this year?
