I don’t want to jinx this, but I’m pretty sure (knock on wood) Isla is potty trained!
We started potty training Isla last August at the encouragement of her sitter. Isla showed a lot of potty training readiness, but it became clear pretty quickly she still had a bit of growing to do so we decided to put her back in diapers. She continued using the potty on the big potty at home at night before her bath, and we’ve tried putting her in panties a couple of times since with improvement, but not success.
About a month ago, though, we noticed that Isla had made some sort of leap and really seemed to get the whole potty thing. We had Easter and a big visit from Kellen’s parents to get through, but a few days after my in-laws went back to Oregon, we sent Isla to daycare with a big stack of underwear and a tiny stack of diapers.
She’s done so well this time! The thing that really seems to have worked best for us is letting her run around naked for a few days. This gave her the opportunity to use the potty on her own without any assistance at all from grown ups and without grown ups constantly pestering her about whether she needed to use the potty. Isla is very independent. She wants to do it herself.
The really great thing is we managed potty training without having to do an incentive system or rewards chart. We’ve just given her a little potty, training pants, and tons of encouragement when she’s gone potty. So she’s not demanding stickers or toys or candy every time she goes. She’s using the potty because she wants to. All we have to do is clap for her, which is pretty easy to do considering how excited we are to be done with diapers.
It feels so good to be over that hump. We do so much less laundry now. I no longer feel like I’ve been taken prisoner by my washing machine. Hallelujah!
